Department Update

As we enter week 4 of the new session I feel it is time to update all classes on the progress they are making:

S1 - Doing very well so far. All classes are focussed and progressing at a good pace through the E-Safety Unit.

Intermediate 1 - Also progressing well through Computer Applications. Make sure you are studying at home though as you have a NAB coming up very soon!

Intermediate 2 - Progressing well although much more emphasis needs to be placed on the importance of self-study. I will be doing spot checks of pupils folders over the coming weeks so pupils will have to be prepared to show me what they have been doing in their own time.

Higher - The class is moving forward well as we are getting into the programming side of the Software Development unit. Make sure you are putting in the effort at home and keeping up with the course through regular self study.

Come and see me if there are any issues that are concerning you about any of your courses in the department.

Intermediate 2 - S4 Update

To all Intermediate 2 S4 pupils:

August to October - whole class working on Intermediate 2 Software Development

Any pupil who fails Intermediate 2 Computing Software Development NAB's will not be allowed to progress with the course. These pupils will start undertaking the new SQA Internet Safety qualification from the end of October onwards whilst the other members of the class continue with Intermediate 2 Computing till May 2010.

Welcome back to Nairn Academy's Computer Science and ICT department all ready for session 2009/10.

Advanced Higher

A new section for Advanced Higher has been added. This includes gateways to Scholar and the VB 2005/2008 EE notes for assisting with the programming aspect of the course.

Free Software Link

I have added below some useful links to free software which can be quickly downloaded to your home computer and used to assist pupils with further developing their 'hands on' skills outwith the classroom:

This is a free, open-source office quite package that allows users to work with various file types including all Microsoft file formats.

Scratch is used to introduce pupils to programming concepts in a fun, easy to learn manner.

Scribus is an open-source Desktop Publishing Package used to create various documents form greetings cards to web adverts.

More will be added over time.
